How to reach us
BY CAR:
From the north:
Leave the motorway A1 at the exit FIRENZE CERTOSA. At the
roundabout after the cash – booth keep right and take the
FIRENZE – SIENA highway. Leave the FIRENZE – SIENA
highway (after about 60kms) at the exit SIENA OVEST and
follow the indications for the “STADIO” by going along
the road “VIA DI PESCAIA” up to the end at the top and,
at the traffic lights turn right into VIA CESARE BATTISTI.
At the top turn left and then right (obligatory direction
traffic sign) into VIALE VITTORIO VENETO which skirts the
FORTEZZA MEDICEA.
From the south:
Leave the motorway A1 at the exit VAL DI CHIANA and at the
roundabout after the cash – booth keep right and take the highway BETTOLLE – SIENA.
When in the vicinity of Siena (after about 54kms), on the right you will find the indication of a flyover FIRENZE – GROSSETO.
Follow the direction FIRENZE (this will lead you to the ring
road around Siena). Leave it at the SIENA OVEST, (the 2nd
exit). Follow the indications to the “STADIO” by going
along the road “VIA DI PESCAIA” up to the end at the top
and, at the traffic lights turn right into VIA CESARE
BATTISTI. At the top turn left and then right (obligatory
direction traffic sign) into VIALE VITTORIO VENETO which
skirts the FORTEZZA MEDICEA.
At this point you have two options:
A) You can park your car straightaway in the
PARKING area (subject to payment) at the STADIO (stadium) at
the end of VIA DEI MILLE (1.60euros per hour from 08:00 to
20:00) or in the FREE PARKING AREAS along the walls of the
Fortress (before arriving at the stadium along via Vittorio Veneto) being careful to take note of the days when the roads
are cleaned, and then reach us on foot.
ON FOOT FROM THE FORTRESS : (10 – 15 minutes on foot).
Once you have left your car, go along VIA DEI MILLE up to
the church of SAN DOMENICO. Take VIA DELLA SAPIENZA, at
the end where it changes its name into VIA DELLE TERME you
will find a little uphill street called COSTA
DELL’INCROCIATA. Take it and turn right. You are in VIA
DEI TERMINI. Look for number 67.
B) You can reach us directly by car to leave your luggage
- once you have arrived it will be up to us to notify the
urban police of your transit through a ZTL area (limited
traffic area)- and then park the car following our
instructions.
BY CAR :
Once in front of the entrance to the stadium in Piazza madre Teresa di Calcutta (at the end of VIA DEI MILLE and before VIALE CURTATONE), there is a big church on your right (SAN DOMENICO). The access to the Limited Traffic Area (ZTL) is where the series of iron polesends and you can see white cameras high up.
Enter and follow VIA DELLA SAPIENZA which leads to VIA DELLE TERME which, in turn, ends up in PIAZZA INDIPENDENZA. Here you must be
careful. There is a narrow street on the left: that is VIA
DEI TERMINI and we are at number 67.
Once you have left your luggage you can park your car in a
GARAGE (subject to payment) 300 metres away from us (100
metres of which are uphill) with which we have an agreement
(15.00euros for 24 hours) (AUTOSILOS PIAN D’OVILE, VIA
PIAN D’OVILE)
Otherwise you can park your car in the parking areas around
the fortress and the stadium (see the point A)).
BY TRAIN:
When you leave the station you can get a taxi ( tel.0577
49222) or catch the first city bound bus ( they are very
frequent). It should drop you in PIAZZA GRAMSCI (or VIA
TOZZI) at 300 metres from us.
Go towards PIAZZA MATTEOTTI where you will see a
department store (UPIM). Keep it to your right and proceed
in the direction of PIAZZA DEL CAMPO. After a few metres,
take the downhill street to your right (on the corner there
is a STEFANEL shop). That is VIA DEI TERMINI. After about 80
metres, at the end of the slope on the right, you will find
number 67 and the B&B “ANTICA RESIDENZA CICOGNA”.
BY BUS /COACH:
Most of the coaches have their terminus in PIAZZA GRAMSCI
(or VIA TOZZI). Some stop at the station. In both cases
follow the directions in the section “BY TRAIN”.
A hint: From ROME and FIRENZE get a coach (respectively by
the companies SENA and SITA) because it is direct and brings
you straight to the city centre, in PIAZZA GRAMSCI, while
the train station is far from the historical centre.
What to see in Siena and in the surroundings ….
It is easy to visit the centre of Siena on foot. The places of interest are numerous, the most famous of which are "Piazza del Campo", where the historical horse race, the " Palio", takes place, the magnificent Cathedral with its recently discovered Crypt, and the Baptistery. But Siena is full of particular nooks and special places off the classical tourist routes. One could go on a tour of the old water fountains or fonts ("fonti"), the big and impressive structures where the women of Siena used to go to wash the laundry; or along the small streets and alleys, the churches and chapels, the museums (among which are the Town Hall museum, Santa Maria della Scala, the National Picture Gallery, the museum of the "Opera del Duomo", "Palazzo delle Papesse" for Contemporary Art, and the house of Santa Caterina.) The Sienese countryside starts a few kilometres away from the centre of the city, and here, too, one has only to take one's pick: to the north-east of Siena is the Chianti area, where the "Chianti" wine originates and gets its name, with its stretches of vineyards and olive tree groves; to the south there is the area of the of the clay hills, the "Crete sense", with their almost lunar landscapes of bare hills interrupted only by an occasional clump of cypress trees here and there or an isolated farmhouse. Beyond this, further south is the area of Montalcino, famous for the "Brunello" wine, Bagno Vignoni with its spa waters, Pienza, well-known for the "Pecorino" cheese, and Montepulciano, another beautiful medieval town. The sea is about an hour twenty minutes' drive away. Along the old road which winds its way across refreshing woodland one will come across the "Ponte della Pia", the brige crossed by Pia dei Tolomei on the way to her exile in Maremma, San Galgano, the roofless abbey, and the nearby Montesiepi, a little medieval chapel where "The Sword in the Stone" is kept. One could also deviate a little from the main road to visit Massa Marittima, a delightful medieval town with a beautiful cathedral. It will be a real pleasure for us to suggest routes which are more or less well-known and to answer, within our limits, to your questions and requests!
